My Big Idea
My Big Idea
A few months ago I was reminded by the Lord that I need to carry a little cash with me at all times so that I will be in a position to meet financial needs of the less fortunate that I frequently run into. I met with the men of my church this morning to break bread and have some fellowship. While sitting there I noticed our food bank and the fact that the shelves were full of food. I was then reminded that it was the same way last week. I was moved by the Lord that the food was not doing anyone any good by sitting there on the shelves. The Lord spoke to me and said "don't wait for the food to be taken, take it to the people who need it". He then promised that when the shelves were empty, He would fill them again and again.
My Big Idea- BE READY!
I will now have ready (in my car) $30.00 in $5 increments and a bag of food from the abundant shelves for the purpose of meeting needs that come across my path. I will simply give some food and $5 to those who are in need.
Will you join me?

After coming home from the Men’s Breakfast on Saturday, my husband was encouraged by what God had put on your heart and pumped about putting together bags of food to keep in his truck to hand out to people he may come across in need. After a bit of brainstorming, he and I jumped in the car and headed down to Michael’s where we purchased 10 brown bags with handles (8 x 10 size). Our next stop was Wal-Mart where we went down every isle of the grocery store side and started choosing canned food in pop-top cans to fill the bags with. We purchased 3 oz to 8 oz size cans, small packs of handi-wipes and plastic utensils. After returning home we filled 6 bags (approximate cost per bag $15). Here is what fit in each one.
ReplyDelete2 bottles of water, 2 cans of fruit (peaches and fruit cocktail), 2 cans of vegetables (corn and peas & carrots), 1 can of spaghettios, 1 can beans with hot dogs, 1 can Vienna sausage, 1 can tuna, 2 granola bars (oats ‘n honey), pack of handi-wipes and in a Ziploc bag we put 6 napkins, 2 forks, spoons & knives and $5.00.
The initial blessing – the joy of working alongside my husband in putting together these bags of hope that will in-turn bless someone in need.
After reading my comment a dear friend posed these questions. I am wondering if the canned food has to remain within a certain temperature? Would it harm them being left in a sometimes hot car? Maybe there is some special kind of container that the food could be put in?
DeleteMy response: Great questions! I did a little research and found a myriad of answers, most of which suggested hot temps don't really affect the canned foods since they are exposed to extreme heat after canning to kill any bacteria. One source did suggest that canned foods not be exposed to greater than 95 degrees when storing. The hope is that the bags of food will not remain in the car for more than a few days to a week. Initially we will only be carrying 1 - 2 bags at a time. In praying over the bags we trust that God will not only open our eyes to the need, but will preserve the food to bring strength both physically and spiritually to the recipient.
The Blessing – People are talking and thinking and moving God’s idea forward! Praise God for an awesome Pastor who listens to God and has a flock that responds by taking action and asking important questions.
So, after the teaching on Sunday. I decided I was tired of saying and feeling like "doing something" and just DOING IT! God has overly blessed me with more than I could possibly need and I need to be giving it away! He is faithful to "re-fil _______" whatever we may need.
ReplyDeleteI work in Costa Mesa, and as you may know this is a very nice area. People, for the most part are abundantly blessed. I was driving from work to the beach on monday night and I saw a lady holding a sign for food. The light was red and she was right by my car. I quickly looked in my purse and not surprised to find any cash. (Bad habit) I found a bag of trail mix that I had from work (unopened). I had taken it to eat at the beach, the spirit said give it away. I did. FINALLY I just did it! She was blessed. I was more blessed. God is good.
